How to Overcome Insomnia

While we all need different amounts of sleep, we all need solid, restful nights to help our bodies and minds restore and to feel renewed. Unfortunately, stress and worry as well as physical symptoms can cause insomnia either occasionally, chronically or off and on. No matter how often, a bad night’s sleep is no fun and the inability to fall asleep is just as bad. Here we look at ways to help you drift off when your head hits the pillow and stay asleep all night long.

Have a routine: Try to go to bed around the same time every night and wake up about the same time as well. When you break from your normal routine, it can really impact your amount and quality of sleep. Having a special night-time routine can help too. Turn off your phone, listen to music, have a nightly beauty routine or take a warm shower are some ways to slow down before closing your eyes.

Watch what you eat and drink: It is best to not eat or drink too close to your bedtime. You do not want to wake up to have to use the bathroom. Know how caffeine affects your body and address how much you have throughout the day.

Curb your naps: If you are not getting enough sleep at night, it can be tempting to sleep during the day. But this can cause a pattern that will be a cycle of the quality of your nighttime sleep. While occasional naps are OK, they should not be a way to catch up on sleep.

Your bed is for sleeping: It can be easy to relax in bed with activities, but it is best to keep your bedroom as a place for sleeping, so that you can keep your mind calm and ready to sleep. Since your bed is for sleeping, it should be as comfortable as possible. This should include quality of bedding, temperature control, lighting and limiting noise.

Leave worrying out of bed: Try to make lists of to-do tasks during the day or take time to think about your next day before you get into bed to cut back on worry and stress.
